The judges' top picks are two talented artists and communicators - James Clark and Alicia Rice
James Clark is a combat veteran and former Marine Corps combat correspondent, currently attending the University of California, Santa Cruz and pursuing a Bachelors of Art in Modern Literature. His multimedia and print stories have appeared in a number of publications including CNN, New York Times, Huffington Post, Oakland Tribune, Santa Cruz Sentinel, to name a few. James believes that "Journalism is far more than a career - at its core, regardless of the medium used, storytelling allows the journalist to bring people closer to remind us that we are a part of a larger whole." A graduate of Santa Clara University, Alicia Rice loves documentary filmmaking for its ability to blend art, education, and social justice. Her current project, Khon Kaen Urban Life, is a series of documentary shorts focusing on the positive steps those in North Eastern Thailand's urban poor community are taking to change their lives. Runners Up and Virtual Team go to Jeanine Russaw, from Long Pond, PA , who is a junior at Hofstra University, double majoring in Journalism and Global Studies, and to Edgar Garcia from San Pablo CA - student at the Art Institute in San Francisco.

Students will learn about the preservation of indigenous cultures, traditions and ecologies when traveling abroad, while focusing on technical, artistic and storytelling skills, thus gaining effective communication tools that can be cultivated throughout their lifetime.
Our winners will be culturally immersed in projects determined by the local community, becoming familiar with the history, challenges and transitions facing the Xukuru nation. Students will work with community leaders to help craft their story and media strategy, with regular time devoted to individual journaling and hands-on collective video and digital storytelling. Travelers develop a keen sense of value for people and place, becoming life-time advocates for social issues and their unique locality.
